rocky’s matcha Single Cultivar Narino Matcha is a unique cultivar characterized by its rich fragrance and mellow flavor. It contains twice as much theanine as conventional matcha cultivars, adding a subtle umami with practically no bitterness. Its unique makeup results in a similar complexity—offering sweet, floral notes and a contrasting aftertaste that feels clean, mild, and refreshing. It has been recognized with the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries’ Award at the National Tea Competition (2010) and the Grand Prix at the Japanese Tea Selection Paris (2010). 

 

We are proud to offer this matcha from our producer & partner Horii Shichimeien. Horii Shichimeien celebrates both the taste and tradition of matcha with a deep regard for their craft and connection to Uji Shichimeien—also known as the Seven Famous Tea Gardens of Uji.

    My #1 Matcha for Usucha

    I used to buy 100g tins of Narino matcha from Horii Shichimeien through one of my fave tea websites--and the product description is spot on. Literally no bitterness and a smoothness that is simply unmatched. Hands down the best matcha I've ever had for usucha. The only thing is the prices have absolutely skyrocketed through the past years. In December 2023, I was able buy my 100g tin from Horii Shichimeien for $189... Now, as of 20/11/2025, the only way to buy Narino is through Rocky's matcha for $78 for 20g (a whopping $390 for 100g).

    PRICEY but good.

    This matcha is PRICEY but absolutely delish! This is a great option for more advanced matcha drinkers looking to treat themselves. Personally, I would only recommend this as an usucha to really appreciate the subtleties of this cultivar.

    This collaboration with Horii Shichimeien is spot on. The Narino is absolutely delectable. Smooth, creamy, full-bodied umami flavor with negligible bitterness or astringency. It's actually in my top 5 matchas ever and I own a wide range of matchas. Will continue to repurchase whenever it's available. Higher price point than others but well deserved for its quality and the fast shipping and frequent availability help support it.

    Horii matcha always hits

    Okay the matcha that Rocky’s source is top tier. My only complaint is there is NO EXPIRATION date! Neither of the matchas I ordered came with a “best by” date or expiration date. I’ve never experienced this with other brands or suppliers.
